  • How often should I change my oil?
This depends on how you drive and the type of oil you use. Many Synthetic oils will now last up to or beyond 15,000 miles while conventional oils should be changed every 3,000 miles.
  • I'm new in town, how do I find a good Mechanic?
Referrals are the best way to find someone you can trust. Certifications are important and most Mechanics have them.
  • Why are car repairs so expensive?
You could compare the cost of a new car to what a Mechanic has invested in tools and training. Here are some helpful suggestions: Many shops use the highest quality parts to insure the best repair, ask about alternatives to lower the cost without compromising quality. Keep in mind, your mechanic isn't going to want to use lower quality if it means he may be doing the job over!

  • What does the Check Engine Light mean?
This light informs you of a possible problem in the computer controls. The Check Engine Light can be intermittent or stay on all the time. It can also be flashing.
When it is flashing the computer sees one or more cylinders misfiring. You should have the vehicle looked at as soon as possible.
  • Are fluid exchanges necessary?
Many of the fluids used in your vehicle are under extreme pressures and temperatures and will not last forever. Changing them when needed helps prevent costly repairs.
  • Do I have to have an emission test or safety inspection to register my vehicle?
Currently in Colorado Springs or Elpaso County no emissions test or safety inspection is required. Check with the Department of Motor Vehicles for other Counties.
  • Can I bring in my own parts?
Here is another way for you to save money, however most Repair Facilities discourage this. The main reason is profit on the parts, not just the labor. It never hurts to ask!

  • Do I have to take my car to the Dealer?

The Right to Repair Act gives you the right to choose the service provider to repair or service your vehicle.

  • Is the Dealer more qualified to service my vehicle?
The truth is independent repair shops have to keep current on training to stay in business and much of the training information is shared.

  • Why should I have a Pre-Purchase Inspection?
Before you purchase a used vehicle have it inspected by your Mechanic. The inspection can uncover existing issues or up coming services. Here are some helpful suggestions:
  • Ask for maintenance records
  • Test drive the vehicle for at least ten miles. turn off the radio and listen for noise that should not be there.
  • Try all of the controls: power windows, heater and air conditioner, etc.

  • After you have driven the vehicle, open the Hood and check for any signs of trouble
  • The last thing to do is kick the tires; this really does no good, but is necessary in keeping in tradition!
  • Now the vehicle is ready for your Mechanic to do a thorough inspection!
